1960s and 1970s
Like the rest of the country, Indiana experienced turbulent times during the 1960s and 1970s.
The civil rights movement illuminated the discrimination and prejudice experienced by African-American Hoosiers.
Participation in the Vietnam War led to protests as young people questioned authority and challenged traditionally accepted views of morality.
The Cold War caused Hoosiers to see their world as one threatened by Communist ideals and goals.
As some Indiana industries such as aerospace engineering helped make the United States a world leader, other industries experienced difficulties. Diminished demand for products such as steel combined with stiffening competition overseas led to the decline of once-booming industrial cities such as Gary.
