Indiana Black History Challenge
Welcome to the 2012 Indiana Black History Challenge!
First, investigate black Hoosiers in the Civil War in the Study Guide. Print a copy of the 2012 game card, answer the 10 questions and return it to the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center by Wednesday, Feb. 29. Or click here to play online.
Two tickets to the Indiana Experience at the History Center and a Donatos pizza coupon will be awarded to the first 5,000 entrants. Get all 10 questions right, and you could win the Family Fun Pack grand prize - an overnight stay at the Indianapolis Marriott Downtown; four tickets to The Children's Museum of Indianapolis; a $25 gift certificate to the Indianapolis Colts Grille; and a family membership to the Indiana Historical Society, which includes free admission to the Indiana Experience for a year. Thirty runners-up will receive a family four-pack of tickets to an Indianapolis Indians game.
Remember: The last day to enter is Feb. 29, 2012. Open to all ages; one entry per person. Entries may be mailed to the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center, Attn: Indiana Black History Challenge, 450 West Ohio Street, Indianapolis, IN 46202-3269.
Teachers, get your students involved in the Challenge! Students may participate individually or as a class with their teacher. Each student should complete a separate game card, including the student's name, teacher's name, school address and school phone number. When the teacher returns the completed game cards to the History Center, he or she will receive a prize for each student.
Teachers who complete an evaluation form may choose from one of these free classroom prizes: By Freedom's Light by Elizabeth O'Maley (historical fiction about the Underground Railroad in Indiana for grades four and up with accompanying lesson ideas), Going Over All the Hurdles: A Life of Oatess Archey by John A. Beineke (biography of Oatess Archey, first black sheriff of Grant County for grades four and up with accompanying lesson ideas) or Visions of Beauty: The Story of Sarah Breedlove Walker by Kathryn Laskey, illustrated by Nneka Bennett (ages 9 through 12).
If you have questions about classroom participation, please e-mail programs@indianahistory.org.
