Getting Started with History Day
National History Day in Indiana enhances history education for students by challenging them to investigate a historical topic of their choosing and guiding them through the research process with a structured rubric. History Day is available to all Indiana students in grades four through 12.
In order to participate, students need an adult sponsor – a teacher or parent – to act as a program liaison and take advantage of the following services:
Sign up for the monthly NHDI Newsletter for teachers.
Download or request the National History Day in Indiana teacher packet, which includes a general information booklet and calendar, NHD theme book and theme sheet, NHD Contest Rulebook, NHDI participation form and student worksheets. Upon receipt of a completed participation form that indicates the number participating students, NHDI staff will provide each student with a free contest rulebook.
Schedule a School Visit
NHDI staff offers programs to fit the needs of teachers and students throughout the school year. Programs may include an introductory presentation to kick off History Day at your school, a discussion about primary sources, project design workshops or project consultations with individual students or small groups.
Once topics have been chosen and preliminary research has begun, schedule a Library Night at your local public library branch where NHDI staff assist students with research. Whether it is local, state, national or world history, we can help students track down the resources they need to help complete their projects. These informal sessions allow students, parents and teachers to come and go as they please with their questions and research needs.
Register for a District Contest
Participation in the History Day competition is optional. However, students are encouraged to showcase their work at these public events. For details on district, state and national competitions, please visit the History Day Contests page.
To request a teacher packet, schedule a school visit or for other assistance, email firstname.lastname@example.org or call (317) 233-9559.
