Printed Collections - Early American Exploration

Because the exploration of the land that eventually became the state of Indiana is intimately tied to the exploration of the North American continent as a whole, the collection includes a broad range of books and maps on the topic.

Highlights of the book collection include a representative collection of the Jesuit Relations (1630s-1680s), as well as accounts by and about individual explorers like Samuel de Champlain (1610s), Fr. Louis Hennepin (1690s), P.-F.-X. Charlevoix (1760s), Alexander Mackenzie (1800-1801), and Lewis & Clark (early 1800s).

The map collection contains many of the most important maps published from ca. 1600 to 1800 that document the emerging cartography of the North American continent and the early United States.
