A Guide to Indiana Women's Oral History Interviews in Selected Repositories

This guide to selected Indiana women's oral history interviews has been produced in conjunction with "Discovering Indiana Women's Voices," a conference sponsored by the Indiana Women's History Association (IWHA, then known as the Indiana Women's History Archives), in conjunction with the Indiana Historical Society and the Indiana Commission for Women. The relationship between the conference theme and this guide is a significant one, for the guide, too, is an effort to "discover women's voices" in oral history tapes and transcripts in archives and library special collections. The guide represents the first incarnation of an ongoing project to locate and describe Indiana women's oral histories in repositories across the state-and beyond. At present, it contains partial listings for five repositories: the Indiana Division of the Indiana State Library, the Oral History Research Center at Indiana University, the Irvington (Hilton U. Brown) Branch of the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library, the Batesville Memorial Public Library, and the Indiana Historical Society.

These five repositories reflect the variety of potential sources for women's oral history interviews. Three of them-the Indiana State Library, the Indiana Historical Society, and the Oral History Research Center-collect materials on a statewide basis. Two, the Batesville and Irvington public libraries, have more specialized and localized resources, which are none the less important for those who seek information on these localities. The entries for all of the repositories have been merged into a single alphabetical list, representing a virtual collection. As future additions to this guide are made (and we welcome such additions) that virtual collection will grow larger and more useful.

Many oral history collections are project-based, containing interviews for a number of people who share similar backgrounds or experiences.  Because this guide documents women's history sources, only women interviewees are listed by name.  (The exception is when men and women were interviewed on the same tape.) Researchers should be aware that these project-based collections may contain additional interviews than those listed.  Researchers should be aware as well of any restrictions regarding publication of oral history interviews.  The Indiana Historical Society, for example, has a permission-to-publish contract for uses that go beyond fair use. The Oral History Research Center states that researchers may use short quotations from the interview transcripts, providing the deed of gift for the transcript does not restrict it, and the interviewee, interviewer, and the Oral History Research Center are given proper credit.

The format for each of the collections or interviews listed below is:

LastName, FirstName. Oral history interview (or collection title), date. Biographical information (if available). Scope and content information (if available). Project name or institutional sponsor (if there is one). Interviewer's name (if available). Format (tapes, transcripts). Repository name. Collection number (if available).

This guide could not have been produced without the hard work and dedication of several IWHA volunteers. I would like to thank those volunteers: Kristen Sanders (who coordinated the work of the other volunteers and also contributed collection information), Catherine Gibson, Barbara Truesdell, and Christina Frausto. Indiana Historical Society Library staffers Susan Darnell and Elizabeth Wilkinson also helped, and I want to thank them as well.
