and Visual Collections Department Subject Guides Subject guides for several areas of the Indiana Historical Society Library's manuscript and visual collections are available in online versions. In some cases, print copies (older and less inclusive than the online versions) may be obtained at no cost from the Manuscript and Visual Collections Department staff members listed below: Guide
to Railroad History Materials in Manuscript and Visual Collections at
the Visual Collection Descriptions, William Henry Smith Memorial Library, Indiana Historical Society (2004). These descriptions for visual collections in the Indiana Historical Society Library were written by Pam Tranfield when she served as visual collections archivist in the mid-1990s. While many of the collections she described were later processed and cataloged (and do not appear here), those in this guide do not have full collection guides and cataloging records. The collections are available for use, however, and the descriptions in this guide can help researchers gain access to them until they are fully processed. Guide to Ethnic History Materials in Manuscript Collections at the Indiana Historical Society (2002). The entries in the guide are arranged by ethnic groups, listed alphabetically: Belgians, Bulgarians, Dutch, English, French, Germans, Greeks, Hungarians, Irish, Italians, Jews, Poles, Russians, Scots, and Swiss. Many of the manuscript collections have individual collection guides. The Society also possesses photographs related to the ethnic history collections. To find out what is available and to view visual materials, contact the coordinator of visual reference services at the IHS library. To request a printed copy of the guide to ethnic history collections or to get additional information on these collections, write to the ethnic history collections coordinator, Indiana Historical Society, 450 W. Ohio St., Indianapolis, IN 46202-3269. Guide to African American History Materials in Manuscript and Visual Collections at the Indiana Historical Society (2004). The guide is divided into six subject areas: personal papers, organizations and institutions, communities, education, race relations, and religious institutions. Many of the collections listed in the guide were acquired during the Black Women in the Middle West Project (1977-1985), a collecting effort to gather primary resource materials of African American women in Illinois and Indiana. Most of the collections described in the guide have individual collection guides that give more complete descriptions of the collections and provide historical or biographical background information. To request a printed copy of the guide to African American collections or to get additional information on these collections, write to the Senior Archivist, African American history, Indiana Historical Society, 450 W. Ohio St., Indianapolis, IN 46202-3269. Guide to African-American Printed Sources at the Indiana Historical Society. This bibliography of books, pamphlets, and periodicals is divided into sixteen major subject areas. The items are arranged alphabetically by main entry (usually author or editor). Each title has been placed under one subject heading. Some categories are very broad (Afro-American History), and many are more defined, e.g. Family and Military History and Slavery in the United States. All of the major categories conform to Library of Congress subject headings. There are descriptions of each subject area to help researchers determine the rationale for the placement of titles. The guide is available in print format only. It is not available online. To request a printed copy of the guide to African American printed sources, write to the Senior Archivist, African American history, Indiana Historical Society, 450 W. Ohio St., Indianapolis, IN 46202-3269. Guide to Women's History Materials in Manuscript and Visual Collections (2004). The guide is divided into two major sections: (1) individuals and families and (2) organizations and projects. Among the collections are personal papers and records of businesses and organizations, including horticultural, literary, political, professional, religious, social, and social services, of 19th and 20th century women. Some of the collections listed in the guide were acquired with assistance from the Indiana Women's History Association, Inc. (IWHA, formerly the Indiana Women's History Archives, Inc.), formed in 1983, a nonprofit organization interested in the preservation of primary resource materials relating to women in Indiana. Others were acquired as part of the Black Women in the Middle West Project (1977-1985), a collecting effort to gather primary sources materials relating to African American women in Illinois and Indiana. Most of the collections described in the guide have individual collection guides, which give more in-depth information on the collections and provide historical or biographical background information. To request a printed copy of the guide to women's history collections or to get more information on these collections, write to the Director of Manuscript and Visual Collections, Indiana Historical Society, 450 W. Ohio St., Indianapolis, IN 46202-3269. Guide to Indiana Women's Oral
History Interviews in Selected Repositories (2001). |
