The collection is a hand-written letter from William Tipton to his mother and father. Tipton writes about his activities during his journey to stay with the Hanks family. He also writes of the pro-Union, anti-slavery sentiment among the people where he is staying. The front page of the letter has red letterhead of an eagle holding a banner in his mouth which reads “THE FEDERAL UNION / IT MUST BE PRESERVED,” and arrows and a branch clasped in his talons.
