BIOGRAPHiCAL SKETCH

Louis C. Webber was born in Louisville, Kentucky on 8 June 1846. In 1849 his parents moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana and lived there till June 1854 when they moved to Evansville, Indiana. Louis started school in 1855, but left in 1859 to work on the family farm until 1861 when he went to clerk at a dry goods store.

He enlisted in the 65th Indiana Infantry on 24 July 1862 and was mustered into Company H. The regiment was in Kentucky until August 1863, and then started for Knoxville. They were the first Union troops to enter the city, arriving on 1 September. From September to December Webber’s company was involved in skirmishes at Rheatown, Blountsville, Waker’s Ford, and Bean’s Station. During the fight at Bean’s Station on 14 December Webber was shot three times in his right leg: in his ankle, calf muscle, and thigh. He was sent to the Asylum Hospital at Knoxville and stayed there until 18 April 1864. From there he was sent to Nashville, and then to Jeffersonville, staying at each place for only a few weeks. He received furlough on 25 June and went home.

He got engaged to Lene R. Blinsinger on 24 November 1864. When his furlough was over he went to the Evansville Hospital and was discharged on 8 February 1865. After his discharge he apprenticed at a hemp makers trade for a year.
