NOTES: |
|
Miss Mary E. Clapp is thought to be the daughter of Nathaniel Scribner and Elizabeth Edwards/Edmond, who were married in New Albany, Indiana on 30 April 1815. Nathaniel Scribner, along with his brothers Joel Scribner and Abner Scribner, founded the city of New Albany, Indiana, in 1813. Nathaniel Scribner died in December 1818 while traveling back to New Albany from a trip to Corydon, Indiana. Her exact date of birth is unknown, but it is most probable that Mary E. (Scribner) Clapp was born sometime between late 1815 and mid-1819.
Dr. Asahel P. Clapp was a prominent man during the early days of New Albany and among many accomplishments, he is noted as the first resident physician of the town. In 1820, he married Mary Lucinda Scribner and together they bore one son, William A. Clapp. Either by divorce or death, Dr. Clapp and Mary were no longer married in January 1822, for at that time, Dr. Clapp became married to Elizabeth Scribner, Mary E. Clapp’s mother.
The details surrounding Mary’s assumption of the name Clapp remain unclear. Mary E. Clapp died on 9 July 1881, in New Albany (Floyd County), Indiana.

The collection of one folder contains two valentines addressed to Miss Mary E. Clapp, New Albany, Indiana.
The smaller valentine is dated 1854 and contains the initials B.F.H. written on the envelope flap next to the year. The larger valentine contains no date or initials, but research indicates this valentine is also likely to be from mid-1800s, purchased at an estimated cost of $1.50.
