SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

Elwell wrote this four-page letter while serving with the 7th Indiana Regiment at Washington Junction, Virginia, to Margaret (Mollie) Fowler in Lawrenceburgh (Dearborn County) Indiana, either late 1862 or early 1863.  In it he discusses his relationship with her and his longing to return to call upon her.  At her request he did not mention war news, but he did relate that he saw the President (Lincoln) and Secretary Stanton at Fredericksburg last Saturday.  A patriotically decorated envelope accompanies the letter.
