BIOGRAPHiCAL SKETCH

Charles Benton Funkhouser (1849–1933) was born in Shenandoah County, Virginia.  He moved to Indiana at an undetermined date.  In 1882, he may have lived near Farmland, Indiana (Randolph Co.) before moving to Muncie (Delaware Co.).  Funkhouser and his wife, Emma, (1862–1936) had two daughters, Lola (b. 1881) and Mabel (b. 1887).  Emma’s maiden name was either Sheets or Rausch.  Charles B. Funkhouser is buried in Springport, Indiana (Henry Co.).

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of a ledger (ca. 1882–1896) kept by Charles Benton Funkhouser and materials that were laid in the ledger.  The majority of the pages in the ledger are filled with a journal kept by Funkhouser.  The journal entries are short (most are only one line), but they do cover every day of Funkhouser’s life from June 1, 1882 to December 30, 1896.  The rest of the ledger is devoted to accounts owed to him.  The ledger is stored as BV 3186.

Material (1862–1936, n.d.) that was laid in the ledger was placed in a folder (SC 2632) for conservation reasons.  The material includes newspaper clippings, receipts, correspondence, poems, and printed items.  Many of the printed items and clippings (as well as later pages in the ledger) mention medical remedies.  Also present are three Confederate bills, a $1 note from the Virginia treasury, and two notes from Richmond, Virginia.
