sCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of a diary kept by Etta Walser for the year 1900.  The first page reads: “Given to Miss Etta Walser by W. A. Ley, Jan. 1, 1900.” References to a William Ley are made throughout the diary; it is likely that he is the W. A. Ley mentioned on the first page.

Entries from the diary indicate that Etta Walser was probably a young girl who lived near Bluffton, Indiana (Wells Co.).  The diary describes events at school and church, the daily activities of her family, and visitors to her home.  Apparently, her family rented rooms in the house to boarders.  Following the diary are treatments for bee stings, burns and consumption.
