NOTES:
Jesse B. Durham (1788-1850) was born near Perryville, Kentucky, and moved to Vallonia, Jackson County, Indiana in 1811 where he was a blacksmith and a farmer. Durham was a member of the commission to move the state capitol in 1820 and a presidential elector in 1828. From 1831-1832 he served in the Indiana House of Representatives as a member of the Democrat Party. Samuel Carr (b. 1782) was born in Virginia and settled in Charlestown, Clark County, Indiana in 1810 where he worked as a carpenter. During the War of 1812 he served as a mounted ranger and was with William Henry Harrison at the Battle of Tippecanoe, 1811.

The collection contains a one page letter from Durham in Vallonia, Jackson County, to Samuel L. Carr in Charlestown, Clark County, Indiana, 8 October 1822. Durham relates sicknesses he and his family had recently suffered and discusses his plan to stop at Carr's home from where they could travel to Kentucky together.
