NOTES:
Gersham Dunn (b. 1808) was born in Hamilton County, Ohio, to Micajah and Sarah (Torrence) Dunn. In 1833, Dunn married Jane (Freeland); they had eleven children: George H., Mary Eliza, Samuel, Hannah Ann, Micajah, Sarah Jane, William Henry, Elizabeth, Elvira P., Amos M., and John. He operated a farm in Manchester, Indiana (Dearborn Co.), and ran a boating business on the Ohio River for about 15 years.
William Tate (fl. 1815-1860) was a native of Boston, Massachusetts. He moved to Lawrenceburg, Indiana (Dearborn Co.) and married Anna (Kincaid) in 1816. They had at least three children: Harriet Louisa, William, Jr., and George D. The elder Tate was a carpenter and operated a lumber business, William Tate and Son, with George, but retired sometime before 1859.
William Tate, Jr., (fl 1850-1860) was a physician and a resident of Lawrenceburg.

This collection consists of a letter, dated September 4, 1846, from a William Tate in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, to George W. Blethin in Foxcroft, Maine. It could not be positively determined whether the author of the letter was William Tate, Sr., or his son. However, the signature on the letter indicates that it may be William, Jr. In the letter, Tate describes a recent trip to Manchester, Indiana, and mentions an accident that befell the 12-year old son of Gersham Dunn.
