BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Dorothea Elizabeth (West) Smith (b. 1917?) was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl R. West. She was a resident of Indianapolis, but may have moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana (Allen Co.) at some point in her life. The date of her marriage and her husband's name could not be determined.

Frederic M. Ayres (1872-1940), the son of Lyman S. (1824-1896) and Maria H. Ayres, was born in Geneva, New York. His father founded L.S. Ayres and Company, a department store based in Indianapolis. After his father's death, Frederic became president of the company, which grew to become one of the leading department stores in the nation. He was active in volunteer efforts during World War II, and was a member of various social clubs in Indianapolis.
Frederic Ayres was married to Eleanor (Allen), a native of Indianapolis, for two years until her death in 1898. In 1904, he married Alma (Hoegh) of Minneapolis, Minnesota. They had three children: Lyman S. Ayres II, Frederic M. Ayres, Jr., and a daughter.
