HISTORICAL SKETCH

The Morgan County Historic Preservation Society received an Indiana Heritage Research Grant (IHRG) from the Indiana Humanities Council and the Indiana Historical Society in 1995. The purpose of the grant was to document the history of the Home Lawn Sanitarium, which was founded in 1889 in Martinsville, Indiana (Morgan Co.). It was known as the Home Lawn Mineral Springs from 1899 until its closing in 1968. The project produced a book, A Look Back at the Home Lawn Sanitarium, authored by the primary researcher for the project, Kimberly J. Bright.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

A Look Back at the Home Lawn Sanitarium was completed as part of an Indiana Heritage Research Grant (#95-3029) awarded to the Morgan County Historic Preservation Society in 1995. This collection consists of an abstract for the project, typescripts of oral history interviews (May 1995-December 1995), publicity materials, a final report, and a bound volume of A Look Back at the Home Lawn Sanitarium.

People interviewed for the project were relatives of owners, physicians and upper-level employees of Home Lawn; waitresses, cooks, porters and other employees; and neighbors of the sanitarium. Topics include: acitvities at Home Lawn during its various stages, its owners and employees, and famous visitors. The interviews are arranged alphabetically according to the interviewee's name.

Interviewees include: Kay Kennedy Branch, Alma Fraker, Joyce Hamilton, Richard Hamilton, Mary Lib Hendricks, Rosemary Hendricks, Dale Johnson, Don Kennedy, Jr., Marilyn Kennedy, Louise Kent, Ray Lewis, Dorothy Norman, Maurice Perry, Richie Powell, Antonius Raemaekers, Frances P. Schnaiter, and Ruth Scott.

Publicity materials, including announcements for a presentation on the project and photocopies of newspaper articles, and a copy of A Look Back at the Home Lawn Sanitarium complete the collection.
