NOTES:
Charles Theodore DeVelling (b. 1843?), the son of Henry W. and Adaline H. DeVelling, was born in Ohio. Both parents were born circa 1813. Charles had six siblings: Isabella C. (b. 1840?) Adaline M. (b. 1844?), Caroline E. (b. 1850?), Mary A. (b. 1854?), Florence Agnes (b. 1856?), and Julia (fl. 1862-1864).
Charles served in the 17th Ohio Infantry Regiment, Company B, during the Civil War. He appears to have worked as a mercantile clerk for much of his life. He and his wife, Susanna (b. 1846?), were married around 1873; they had three children, Lewis Price, Susa[n?], and an unidentified child. Charles and his wife moved to Washington, D.C. at an unknown date.
Lewis Price DeVelling (b. 1874?) was born in Zanesville, Ohio, where he worked for the Times Recorder. He moved to Washington, D.C., and was employed as an internal revenue inspector. He and his wife, Bertha May ("May B.") Ballard (fl. 1907-30), were residents of Indianapolis, ca. 1907-1930. They had a least one daughter, Helen Irene (fl. 1914-1925).
H. W. Schideler (fl. 1930) was the owner and publisher of The Girard Press in Girard, Kansas.
Beatrix Sherman (fl. 1909-1933) was an American miniature and silhouette artist. She attended Henderson College in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, and studied art throughout the United States and Europe.
Scott Calvin Lyon (fl. 1948) was the son of Calvin C. Lyon. He received degrees from Ohio State University, MIT, Chicago University and Columbia University. Lyon served as vice consul in the U.S. Embassy in Moscow and in Vladivostock, U.S.S.R. In 1948, he married Nancy Otis Wilson (fl. 1948) of Lake Forest, Illinois. She attended San Luis Preparatory School in Colorado, Converse College (South Carolina), and Columbia University.

This collection consists of the correspondence of the DeVelling family of Ohio and Indianapolis. The early letters (1862-1864) are from Charles T. DeVelling to his sister, Julia Herriott, in Zanesville, Ohio. They detail Charles' activities as a soldier in the 17th Ohio Infantry Regiment, Company B. The majority of the later correspondence (1914-1933) is addressed to Bertha May ("May B") and Helen Irene DeVelling from "Mother DeV," who was probably Charles' wife.
The collection also contains four black and white photographs, possibly of members of the DeVelling family. Also present are miscellaneous items, including a painting of a flower by Adeline DeVelling; a Memorial Presbyterian Church Register (1907); and newspaper clippings.
