NOTES:
John S. Reed (fl. 1847-1854) served in the 5th Indiana Infantry Regiment, Company H, during the Mexican War (1846-1848). He was the postmaster in Hartford City, Indiana (Blackford Co.) from March to October 1854.
John Joseph Cook (d. 1880) from Ross County, Ohio, moved to Hartford City, Indiana, in 1836, and married Marthesia Baldwin (Marthesia - Shinn/Marthetsea - Biographical and Historical Record of Jay and Blackford Counties). Cook was the first surveyor of Blackford County (June-December 1844), county auditor (1846-1851), and a county clerk. He moved to Missouri, and resided there until his death.

This collection consists of a six-page, handwritten copy of a letter, dated November 18, 1847, to John J. Cook from John S. Reed, a soldier in the 5th Indiana Infantry Regiment, while Reed was in Veracruz, Mexico. It is addressed to "Friends of Blackford." In the letter, Reed describes his regiment's trip to Veracruz.
