BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Homer Earl Capehart (1897-1979), the son of Alvin Thomas and Susan (Kelso), was born in Algiers, Indiana (Pike Co.). During World War I, he served in the 12th United States Infantry from 1917 to 1919, and was promoted to sergeant. In 1921, Capehart married Irma Viola Mueller (1897?-1985), and raised three children: Homer Earl, Thomas and Patricia Louise.

He engaged in farming and the radio, phonograph and television manufacturing business until 1944, when he was elected to the United States Senate as a Republican. Capehart won re-elections in 1950 and 1956, but failed to secure a fourth term in 1962. While a Senator, he was a member of the Committee on Banking and Currency (83rd Congress), and chaired the Joint Committee on Defense Production (83rd Congress).

After his political career, Capehart returned to farming and manufacturing. He resided in Indianapolis, Indiana, until his death.
