NOTES:
Joseph Hess (1823-1901) was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He later moved to Ohio, and was a lieutenant in the 61st Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. He enlisted on November 21, 1861, but resigned the following June due to injuries received during battle. He re-enlisted in February 1865 as a corporal in the 189th Infantry Regiment, Company K, and served until the end of the war. In 1886, Hess joined the Geo. H. Chapman Post #209 (Indianapolis, Indiana) of the Grand Army of the Republic, a social and fraternal organization for Union veterans of the Civil War.
