HISTORICAL SKETCH

William A. Van Buskirk (d. 1862) was a resident of Wabash County, Indiana. He was mustered into Company F of the 8th Indiana Regiment on 5 September 1861, attained the rank of sergeant, was detached to the 1st Brigade, 1st Division Engineers, Army of the Southwest, and died in a St. Louis Missouri, hospital on 8 December 1862.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection, comprising three folders, contains the correspondence and records of William A. Van Buskirk and the widow's pension records for Emily Van Buskirk Reik, 1846-1902. Items include letters to William Van Buskirk from his uncle, J. C. Van Buskirk in New York, 1857, from his father, Lucius Van Buskirk in Kirstin, N. C., 1860, and letters from William to his wife, Emily ("Emma"), while with the Union Army at Camp Morton, Indianapolis, and from Virginia and Missouri, 1861-1862. The collection also contains sales of "pot ashes" (potash) on T. Schmeck's account, 1846, Van Buskirk's discharge paper, 25 November 1861, and the notification of his death and place of internment, December, 1862. Also contained in the collection are thirteen government agency documents regarding Emily Van Buskirk's widow's pension, 1863-1902, including letters, forms, and certificates. There is also one folder of photocopies of William Van Buskirk's military records obtained from the National Archives in 1958.
