A resident of Hudson, Wisconsin, Dennis Tuttle served in the Indiana Infantry 20th Regiment (1861-1865) during the Civil War. He was commissioned on August 11, 1863. During his service, Tuttle was promoted to Quartermaster.

The 20th Indiana was organized in Lafayette in July 1861. The regiment fought in campaigns throughout North Carolina, Maryland, and Virginia., joining the Army of the Potomac at various times. From February 12 to May 22, 1863, the Army of the Potomac's Calvary Corps was commanded by General George Stoneman (1822-1894). Stoneman began his military career in California and the Southwest. During the Civil War, he served a number of assignments, many as a leader of calvary divisions. After retiring from service in 1871, Stoneman moved to California, where he served as a district railroad commissioner and one term as governor.
