HISTORICAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Lillian Fehrenbach Doane (1913- ) was born in Jasper, Dubois County, Indiana, of German descent. She was locally educated and spent her entire life working and raising a family in Dubois County. Norbert Krapf (1943- ) was also born in Jasper and received a Ph.D. in English and American Literature from the University of Notre Dame. He is the author of ten books and is a Professor of English at Long Island University, New York. Heiko Muehr (1970- ) is a native of Bremen, Germany, and is a graduate student at Indiana University, Bloomington.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection is comprised of oral history transcripts from three interviews conducted by Heiko Muehr, a graduate student at Indiana University, Bloomington, for the Oral History Research Center, and funded by an Indiana Heritage Research Grant. Muehr interviewed Lillian Doane on 23 October 1993 and 24 January 1994, and Norbert Krapf on 6 August 1993. The Doane interview contains reminiscences about life in German-American community of Jasper, Indiana, personal and family stories, and genealogical information about the Fehrenbach family in Germany and the United States. The Krapf interview contains accounts of the author's life and literary career, and his efforts to preserve the German-American culture of southwestern Indiana.
