HISTORICAL SKETCH

The 40th Indiana Volunteer Regiment was organized at Lafayette on 30 December 1861 under Colonel W. C. Wilson. Most of the men of Company E came from Frankfort and Hillsboro.

The regiment served first in Kentucky and Tennessee, returning to Kentucky to follow Bragg. It then moved to Murfreesboro and fought at Stone's River. Then it served near Chattanooga and in the advance on Atlanta. It was than sent back to Chattanooga to pursue Hood, then to New Orleans, and finally to Texas.

This collection contains one item, an ornamental battle roll of Company E of the 40th Indiana Regiment, listing battles 1862-1865. It is on a sheet of lined paper, with an eagle drawn at the top, and lists the regiment's actions by date.
