HISTORICAL SKETCH

William Hancock apparently used this notebook in 1851. It was used again for another purpose in 1868-1870.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

This collection contains one item, a notebook first used as a journal, about 1851, and then as a scrapbook, about 1868-1870.

The inside cover carries the following, written in pencil: "William Hancock his book price 15-- 1851." The pages of the book are filled with writing, some in the form of a journal or draft letter: "Perhaps I ought not to have asked your views in regard to the matter..."

The same pages have been used to mount clippings, several with a bent toward humor. A few are dated from Indianapolis, 1868-1870.
