In 1943-1944 Joseph H. Dame was a private in the 177th Military Police Prisoner of War Detachment. During this period the detachment served mainly in Oran, Algeria, with some travel to Palermo, Tunis, and Bizerte.
This collection consists of one item, a transcript of Joseph H. Dame's journal from 6-24-1943 to 9-7-1944. Many entries are very short ("We moved to another camp"). In longer entries, Dame notes that "about all African towns are alike, having casbahs, Arabs, and Frenchmen;" sees Arab women carrying 75-100 pounds of firewood on their backs; and objects to having to wear woolen uniforms at a French celebration while "all other troops wore their summer clothes."
MAIN ENTRY: Dame, Joseph H.
