HISTORICAL SKETCH

The 12th Indiana Volunteer Regiment was organized in May 1861 for one year's service. It served in Virginia and fought at Second Bull Run. In August 1862 it was reorganized for three year's service. It served in Kentucky, fought against Kirby Smith at Richmond, was taken prisoner and paroled. In November 1862 it went to Tennessee to serve under Grant, and was involved with the siege and fall of Vicksburg. The regiment was then sent east to serve under Sherman as he advanced on Atlanta and marched to the sea. It then proceeded through North Carolina, stopping in Raleigh.

T. J. Williams says in this letter that he served in Company D of the 12th Regiment, enlisting on 10 November 1863 and being mustered out on 5 January 1866. Terrell's Report of the Adjutant General does not list T. J. Williams in Company D or any other company of the 12th Regiment.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

This collection contains one item, a letter written in 1929 by an 84-year-old Civil War veteran about his war experiences. His letter mentions several battles, also that Williams voted for Lincoln in 1864 though not of age, and that after Lincoln's assassination "the officers could hardly keep the soldiers from burning the city [of Raleigh]."
