The Hardin family lived near Pleasantville in Sullivan County, Indiana. None of the names in these letters appears in available Sullivan County sources.
This collection contains two letters by female members of the Hardin family, dated 1886 and 1896. In a letter dated 30 December 1886, addressed to Mrs. Nancy Hardin, "Dear Mother and Sisters," a [daughter] announces the death of her four-week-old baby, Lillie Maye. In a letter dated 30 June 1896, from Pine Bluff, Arkansas, Lizzie Hardin tells her sister, Mrs. Bettie Stanton, about the death of their mother. Both letters are unusually specific about symptoms and circumstances.
