The 31st Indiana Regiment was organized at Terre Haute on 15 September 1861 for a term of three years. It moved to Kentucky, and was camped at Calhoun until February 1862 when it moved to Fort Donelson in time to take part in action there on 13-14 February. In March the regiment moved to Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee, and was engaged at Shiloh, losing 22 killed, 110 wounded, and 10 missing.
George Harvey (fl. 1861-1862) was commissioned captain of the 31st Regiment, having previously organized a company of home guards in Rockville, Parke County. Badly wounded at Shiloh, he was shot in the head while being removed from the field, and died instantly. His replacement as captain, James R. Hallowell, survived, and eventually commanded the 31st Regiment.
Harvey married Martha Thompson, and at his death left three small children.

This collection, filling one folder, contains photocopies of the military records of Captain George Harvey in 1861-1862, of a portrait, and of two letters written to his wife on 13 January and 1 April 1862. In the letters Harvey, who was nearly as partial to underlining as Queen Victoria, had a good deal to say about sickness in the regiment.
