John G. Gaugh (1826-1913) was born in Brownsville, Pennsylvania, the son of Boyd and Sarah (Smiley) Gaugh. He began working on river steamers at the age of eleven as a cabin boy. He then learned to be an engineer, and served on steamers on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers until the Civil War. After this he worked at the New Albany Rail Works and finally at the Alexandria (Indiana) Steel Company.
This collection contains one item, a photocopied 28-page pamphlet entitled "The Life and Times of John G. Gaugh, Riverman extraordinary, 1826-1913. Based on his personal account...by Chester B. Gaugh, Jr." (1992). The booklet annotates an account by John G. Gaugh of his steamboat service from 1837 to 1865, and adds some family details and a few illustrations.
