BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Joram Grable (fl. 1852-1855) was born in Pennsylvania, but by 1852 had moved to Cass County, Indiana, and had married Lucy Anne Carson. This marriage produced six children. Grable taught school both in Pennsylvania and in Indiana. In Indiana he was paid $1 a day or $72 a quarter. At one time his one-room school held fifty-four scholars, with ten more enrolled but not present. He also did some farming, built his own house, and contracted to do some ditching for the State.

Joram's wife was the daughter of Thomas G. and Esther (Hester) Carson. The Carsons were wealthy enough so that the Grables thought it reasonable to ask them for a gift of land worth $400-$500 (such as they had already given to Lucy Anne's siblings). During the period 1852-1855 the Grables lost a young son, and were thinking of moving from Cass County. At one point they built a house in Tipton, but found that "it has the rufest set of people i ever saw," and was "sickly" as well.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

This collection contains four letters, dated 1852-1855. They are written from Joram and Lucy Anne Grable to her parents, Thomas and Esther Carson. The letters carry news of family sickness, of Joram's current employment, and of the family's financial situation. In 1855 the family is "destitute," but they keep finding pieces of land, both in Cass and Tipton Counties, which they hope the Carsons will buy for them.
