Alfred N. Johnson (born 1874), a native of Pekin, Pierce Township, Washington County, Indiana, was the son of George M. and Sarah Elrod Johnson. He at first worked in his father's general merchandise store in Pekin, but in 1911 he purchased the biggest business block in Pekin and set up on his own to sell hardware, implements, wagons, and buggies. He married Bertha E. Bierly and they had two sons.

This collection consists of a diary for 1900-1901, written on the blank pages of a "buyer's want book." Entries are brief and in pencil, with comments on the weather, the day's work (worked on smokehouse, painted store, dug sweet potatoes, bought shoes), and frequent recreations (shooting squirrels and rabbits; hunting paw-paws, berries, and chestnuts; listening to a medicine show or a political speaker).
