Donald F. Lawlis (1921-1951) was born in Indianapolis. He attended Arsenal Technical High School. Enlisting in the U. S. Army in May 1949, he received his basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky, and went to Korea in August 1950. He achieved the rank of sergeant. In November 1950 he was reported missing. Later it was learned that he died of tuberculosis at Prisoner Camp #1 in North Korea. His remains were returned in March 1956.
This collection, filling one folder, contains a letter, clippings, and folders of memorial services, dated 1951-1956. The material traces the slow process by which Sgt. Lawlis's family learned of his death and recovered his remains.
