BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Daniel Macauley was commissioned a first lieutenant in the 11th Indiana Volunteers in April 1861, and shortly afterward was made adjutant. This was a three-month enlistment. In April 1862 Macauley was commissioned a major in the same regiment; he was promoted to colonel in March 1863. Under his command the regiment participated in the siege of Vicksburg in 1863, and operated under Sheridan in the Shenandoah Valley in 1864. Macauley was mustered out as a brevet brigadier general in July 1865, but then re-entered the service as a colonel in the 9th regiment of Hancock's Corps. He was serving in this capacity in December 1865.
