An act of 3 February 1832 provided that, if a majority of freeholders in a town objected, they might prevent the granting of a license for a grocery to sell spirituous liquors. In August 1833, a group of freeholders in Indianapolis, including Calvin Fletcher and Noah Noble, signed a petition objecting to such a grant of license.
This collection consists of one item, an 1833 petition to the Commissioners of Marion County against granting a grocery license, on the ground that spirituous liquors are unnecessary, and that they cause "pauperism, quarling [sic], gambling, idleness and other crimes." Calvin Fletcher leads the list of signers. A bottom section of the petition is missing.
