BIOGRAPHiCAL SKETCH

William Tinsley (1804–85) was born in Clonmel, County Tipperary, Ireland.  He worked as an architect in Ireland for some years, espousing the Gothic style.  His most ambitious project was remodeling of the entire town of Cahir for the Earl of Glengall.  Other work included houses, churches, and manor houses.  In 1848 he made sketches of a famous trial for treason which was held at Clonmel.

In 1851 Tinsley came to America and settled in Cincinnati.  He designed buildings for Rockwell, Kenyon, and Wabash colleges, and for Ohio Wesleyan and Northwestern Christian (Butler) universities and the University of Wisconsin.

William Tinsley's brother Thomas, also an architect and builder, remained in Ireland.  Several generations of William Tinsley’s descendants also resided in Ireland.

J. D. Forbes was professor of history and fine arts at Wabash College, Crawfordsville, Indiana, and the author of Victorian Architect: The Life and Work of William Tinsley (Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 1953).
