HISTORICAL SKETCH

Lucien L. Green (born 1873) was a member of a Rushville family, which produced five generations of physicians. However, early experiences helping his father, Dr. Lot Green, on house calls persuaded him to seek another profession. He moved to Indianapolis and became a loan officer at the Bankers Trust Company on East Ohio Street. He married Charlotte (Lotta) Henschen, and they lived at 509 Stevens Street just off Virginia Avenue.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

This collection consists of three items, dated 1898-1947. First is a copy of a three-page letter to Green from his friend Orville Billings stationed at Fort Sam Houston in Texas, graphically describing his experiences during the flood which devastated Galveston in September 1900. Second is a copy of a 1947 article from a journal about the medical careers of the Green family beginning in 1846.

The third item is a bound facsimile of the journal kept by Lucien Green from July 1898 to June 1900. Inscribed in a small notebook, the journal contains brief entries, mainly of expenses, from frequent small allowances to his wife to frequent purchases of cigars for the office to railroad and hack fares when he traveled about the state on business. The birth of a daughter, Gertrude, is entered without comment.
