Decatur County, centering on Greensburg, is in southeast central Indiana. Salt Creek Township is in the southeast corner of the county, and is generally rural in character. The Salt Creek Township School in 1888-1890 was taught by Ellen Moody. There were thirty-six students, divided into three grades. Students in Grade 1 ran from six years of age to eleven; in Grade 2 from eight to twelve; in Grade 3 from eight to fourteen.
There seem to have been 137 teaching days. Textbooks used included McGuffey's Readers (Indiana Series), Ray's Arithmetic, Harvey's Grammar, and "Eclectic" Writing and Geography. The school had a dozen visitors during the year.
This collection is the school register of Salt Creek Township for school years 1888-1889 and 1889-1890, entered in a printed Model School Register. The record includes attendance figures and lists of textbooks and visitors. This is probably a typical rural school record of the period.
