Louis (Ludwig) Sahm was born in Germany. He and his wife, Charlotte, left Germany in November 1844, and arrived in Indianola, Texas, after an eight week perilous voyage on January 1, 1845. Sahm and his family soon moved to New Braunsfels, Texas, where they resided for three years before moving to Indianapolis. Louis Sahm assisted in the construction of the original Union Station in Indianapolis, and in 1862, he opened a grocery store on Fort Wayne Avenue in the same city. Sahm continued in the grocery business at the same location until his death in 1897. He was also one of the organizers of the First German Reformed Church in Indianapolis and was the father of ten children.

The collection consists of Sahm's personal diary written in Indianapolis from October 9, 1856 to January 1, 1858. The entire volume is written in German script.
