HISTORICAL SKETCH

The Grand Lodge Auxiliary Fraternal Order of Police was organized in 1941 as the ladies auxiliary of the National Fraternal Order of Police with Kathryn Milton of Pittsburgh as the first president. Ladies Auxiliaries of F.O.P.s had been in existence since November 1920, helping to serve and support their husbands in the law enforcement profession. The Indianapolis Ladies Auxiliary #86 dates from September 1940, and the Indiana State Auxiliary Fraternal Order of Police (the state chapter of the Grand Lodge Auxiliary) was started in 1950.

Sources: Information in collection.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection consists of three histories: the Indianapolis F.O.P. Ladies Auxiliary #86 (2 pages) written in 1991; a History of the Indiana State Auxiliary Fraternal Order of Police 1950-1980 (photocopy of 21 pages listing the state and local auxiliaries histories for Indiana, apparently from a national directory); and A History of the Grand Lodge Auxiliary Fraternal Order of Police, 1941-1991 (50th Anniversary pamphlet, 8 pages, of the history of the national organization).
