BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Joel Guthrie lived in Crawfordsville, Indiana, in 1866. His name does not appear in the Index of Persons and Firms of Montgomery County. In 1866 he seems to have been the heir of someone with substantial holdings (in land and notes) in Montgomery and Shelby Counties.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

This collection, consisting of seven items, contains business letters, dated 1866-1867, to Joel Guthrie from S. B. Moxley, his agent in Shelbyville, and two other business agents. The letters mainly deal with the payment of notes; in addition, two of the letters from Moxley mention railroad construction in Shelby County and "grievous" trouble in the local church.
