The Chicago, South
Shore and South Bend Railway is an electric, high speed interurban railroad. The
operation was started by Samuel Insull in 1901. By
1908, it had connected the Northwest Indiana cities of South
Bend, Gary,
Hammond, and East
Chicago. The company had an initial problem of
obtaining a right of way from the Illinois
state line to Chicago. At first the
electric trains had to stop at the state line where they were pulled by steam
engines of the Illinois Central to Kensington from where the passengers had to
board Illinois Central suburban trains for downtown Chicago.
In 1911 the South Shore
cars were attached to Illinois Central trains at Pullman
for a more direct means, and a short time late, a direct line from South
Bend to Chicago
was established. The trains traveled at frequent intervals in the morning and
evening to accommodate commuters who worked in Chicago.
