HISTORICAL SKETCH

Barnard of Westville, Porter County, Indiana was mustered into Company K of the 73rd Indiana Regiment on August 16, 1862, and was mustered out on July 1, 1865 as a 1st sergeant.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

Papers consist of four letters from Barnard with the 73rd Indiana Regiment in Tennessee and Alabama to Miss Flora Putnam of Valparaiso, Indiana (letter of Sept. 10, 1864), and Berrien County, Michigan (letters from Feb.-May, 1865). Letters are especially literary and contain information about Barnard's regiment's activities, local news, and his desire to return home.
