HISTORICAL SKETCH

In February, 1968, Katherine Davis Maye, a teacher at Indianapolis Public School #87, initiated a Hall of Fame wall to proclaim the achievements of a select group of alumni. The purpose of the Black History Month exhibit was to surround the school's students with an atmosphere of success; to honor former students; and to spotlight careers uncommon in the black community. During the 14-year tenure of the program, honorees included a cardiologist, public affairs director of a television station, an author, attorneys, a foreign diplomat, and a Deputy Assistant Secretary of Navy.

Although several of the inductees lived throughout the United States, many had settled in Indianapolis.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

From 1968-1982, schoolteacher, Katherine Davis Maye, collected biographical materials from former School #87 pupils. Maye's collection includes the files of the School #87 Hall of Fame project. The three folder collection includes a project description by Maye. An Indianapolis Public School newsletter (Intergroup Relations Communications, May, 1976) contained within the collection has an article about the project. The project description and newsletter, as well as some newsclippings, are in folder 1. Biographical materials and photographs (folder 2) and permission statements to submit information to the Indiana Historical Society (folder 3) from Hall of Fame alumni represent the bulk of the collection. There is a summary statement and a photograph for each participant. Some of the summary statements, compiled by Katherine D. Maye, are supplemented by her handwritten updates and/or resumes and other supporting documents, probably supplied by the participants in 1986. The inductees and the years they were honored include Carl D. Anderson (1973), Larry O. Banks (1969), Dr. Paul Terry Batties (1975), Dr. Warren R. Betty (1970), Brenda E. Bowles, Esq. (1975), Rozelle Boyd (1969), Colonel Harry W. Brooks (1971), Donald R. Davidson (1982), Major Fred Davidson III (1982), Charline C. Duline (1970), Dr. Jacqueline Bottoms Hoop (1978), William L. Jackson (1979), Jean McAnulty Lamm (1968), Raymond A. League (1969), Carolyn R. Mattocks, Esq. (1981), Joan Myers (1968), Dr. Alice Roberts Palmer (1980), Claudia Polly (1968), Rear Admiral William E. Powell, Jr. (1974), James W. Pyles (1968), Henry J. Richardson III, Esq. (1968), Lawrence Ridley II (1972), Kaaren Burke Rodman (1968), Wallace Terry (1968), Lieutenant Colonel William W. Walker (1971), and Judith R. Waugh (1977).
