HISTORICAL SKETCH

James Washington Cass (1839-1865) was born in Brown Township, Hancock County, Indiana, the son of Aaron and Elizabeth (Mitchell) Cass. In 1860 he married Elizabeth Cook, and the couple had two children, Sarah Anne (born 1861) and James Louis (born 1863).

In August 1862 Cass enlisted, from Willow Grove in Hancock County, in the 99th Indiana Infantry Regiment. The regiment served in Tennessee, then at the siege of Vicksburg, and then with Sherman in his advance on Atlanta. In May 1864 it engaged in skirmishes at Resaca and at Dallas. In the latter action on 28 May, Cass was captured. Having been imprisoned for nearly a year at Andersonville, he was on his way home after Appomattox on the packet "Sultana" when it blew up and sank on the Mississippi River on 27 April 1865.
