BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Joseph Tarkington (1800- 1891), born in Nashville, Tennessee, was a Methodist circuit rider in southern Indiana (1821- 1862), and a farmer near Greensburg, Decatur Co. He was grandfather of author Booth Tarkington.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection contains Tarkington's correspondence, from Centreville (1831) and Greensburg (1861), with the Slawson family, and a letter from Greensburg (1888) to John, Matthew, and William Tarkington. There is a telegram (1891) from R. A. Kemp, and a letter from John W. Ray in Indianapolis (1891). Three Tarkington diaries, dated 1888, 1889, and 1891, relate happenings from farm and family life in Greensburg. The collection was microfilmed by the Indiana Historical Society in August, 1994.
