BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Josiah M. Ephlin (b. 1840?), the son of Alaxander and Polly Ephlin, was a farmer and horticulturist near Bloomingdale, Indiana (Parke Co.). Ephlin served with the 85th Indiana Regiment, Company A, from August 1862 to June 1865. At the time of his mustering, he was a resident of Annapolis, Indiana (Parke Co.). Ephlin married Anna J. TenBrook (b. 1840, JenBrook-Prairie Farmers', p. 139) in 1867 and had three children: Ada, William T. (b. 1869), and Theodosia. Ephlin operated the firm J.M. Ephlin and Son (the exact nature of the business could not be determined).

Edwin Farrer (d. 1921) was born in England. His family moved to New York about the time that he was ten years old. Farrer moved to Rushville, Indiana (Rush Co.) in 1870. He was an artist whose early work included painting scenery for theaters. Farrer married Sarah Jane Broadhead. He was active in civil affairs and held the position of county clerk for many years. He was a charter member of the Rushville Lodge, No. 132, Independent Order of Oddfellows, and the Canton Rushville No. 21, Patriarchs Militant Independent Order of Oddfellows. Farrer died in Indianapolis.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of material (1894-1938) relating to the Josiah M. Ephlin family of Parke County, Indiana. It contains miscellaneous family correspondence, although some of the letters refer to the maple syrup industry, as well as the Indiana School for the Deaf. There are also letters (1818-1820) to a Mrs. John Mater in Rockville, Indiana, written from an unknown writer in Montezuma, Indiana (Parke Co.). This might have been Mary (Culver) Mater, but any relationship to the Ephlin family could not be determined.

Also present are three Independent Order of Oddfellows leaflets written by Edwin Farrer of Rushville, Indiana (Rush Co.), ca. 1902-1903.
