Asa E. Sample was born on 20 April 1840 in Knightstown, Indiana. On 30 October 1862 Sample was mustered into the Union Army where he was ranked corporal in Company E of the 54th Infantry Regiment, Indiana. The 54th Infantry Regiment was organized in October, mustered into service for one year in November, and left Indianapolis, Indiana, for Memphis, Tennessee, in December. The regiment served under Colonel John DeCourcey’s Brigade of General George W. Morgan’s Division of the Thirteenth Army Corps. The 54th Infantry Regiment participated in the campaign on Vicksburg and the capture of Jackson, Mississippi. While serving in the Union Army, Sample was promoted in rank to sergeant. Sample was mustered out along with the rest of the 54th Infantry Regiment in New Orleans, Louisiana, on 8 December 1863.
After returning to Knightstown, Sample married Sarah Anne Kitley on 19 October 1865. Sample in later years became an active member of the Jerry B. Mason Post No. 168, G.A.R., Knightsown, where he served in a number of official posts sometime between 1883 and 1905. Also, Sample is listed as one of the original stockholders in the Citizens’ State Bank of Knightstown.
Asa Sample died in Knightstown, Indiana, on 5 September 1910.
James N. Sample was born sometime around 1842. He enlisted and served with his brother, Asa E. Sample, in the 54th Infantry Regiment, Company E. He was mustered into service as a private on 30 October 1862 in Indianapolis, Indiana, and was mustered out of service in New Orleans, Louisiana, on 8 December 1863. No other information was located on James N. Sample.

This collection consists of the Civil War diaries of Asa E. Sample. They deal with his involvement as an enlisted man with the 54th Infanty Regiment, Company E. Volumes one through three are the original diaries kept by Sample between 9 December 1862 and 22 December 1863. There is also a photocopied embellished version of the diaries transcribed by Asa Sample and finished by James Sample in 1912 after Asa’s death. The embellished version is only available as a photocopy of the original transcription, which was not donated at the time the other materials were in 1962, and which could not be located in the year 2000.
The collection is also available on microfilm as F 1353.
