NOTES: |

Samuel Caldwell Meredith was born in 1807 in Pennsylvania to John Wheeler and Elizabeth (Busbey) Meredith, who were married in 1793. His father was born in 1761 in the West Indies to Welsh parents and served as a soldier in the Revolutionary War. Samuel C. Meredith married Margaret Ballard in 1829 in Springfield, Illinois. Their son William Morton Meredith, who married Terressa A. Richey, was born in 1835, and their daughter Emily Meredith, the wife of Edward Willis Nicholson, was born in 1841 in Centerville, Wayne County, Indiana. Edward and Emily had a daughter Margaret and a son, the well-known Meredith Nicholson.
Samuel Caldwell Meredith was an early Centerville settler. He served as an editor and publisher of the local newspaper in pioneer days. He joined the Gold Rush to California in 1849 but returned to Indiana in 1852 to establish a home in Indianapolis, where he resided for the remainder of his life. After the death of his wife, he moved in with his daughter and son-in-law. Samuel Meredith died on 9 February 1899.

Five letters were written in San Francisco in 1850 during the Gold Rush. The remaining letters were written between 1894 and 1898, a majority of which depict Samuel Caldwell Meredith as an old gentleman living in Indianapolis with his daughter Mrs. Edward W. Nicholson and his grandson Meredith Nicholson.
