HISTORICAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Jacob Moore (fl. 1862-1865) was a resident of Mooresville, Indiana (Morgan Co.). He was mustered into service with the 7th Indiana Regiment, Company I, on July 14, 1862. In September 1864, Moore was transferred to the 20th Indiana Regiment, Company G. He was mustered out in May 1865.

The 7th Indiana Regiment (1861-1864) was organized in Indianapolis in September 1861. It served throughout Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. The 7th participated in a number of important battles, including Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredricksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburgh. In the spring of 1864, the regiment joined the Army of the Potomac and continued to see action. In September of that year, the 7th Indiana was consolidated with the 19th regiment, which was consolidated with the 20th regiment a month later. Soldiers who had served with the 7th Indiana were mustered out in July 1865 when the 20th Indiana was discharged.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of research material gathered by John R. Hall of Ashland, Ohio, for a paper entitled "An Enfield Rifle Used by Company I, 7th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, ca. 1861–65, and Inscribed by the Veteran Who Used It." The material includes photocopies of research sources, correspondence, drawings, photographs, and Hall's findings. Hall's detailed analysis of the rifle allowed him to identify its manufacturer, a history of its use, and the soldier who owned it, Jacob Moore. The material was removed from a binder due to conservation concerns and kept in its original order.
